Formula Drift is returning 3rd time to Orlando Speed World and so am I as it’s just a 4 hour trip from Miami. It is the 2nd round of 2017 championship series and round 1 of Formula D PRO2. Orlando Speed World is excellent for shooting finals during the sunset. Heat was terrible, everyone got burnt, sweaty and dirty from flying tire particles.
My team “Juha Rintanen Motorsports” had problems with gearbox – broke two dogboxes and combined into one. But dropped out in Top32. My friends from Latvia – HGK Motorsport got further and had same battle as a year before with Mike Essa, and this time my buddies lost. So I just shot whatever possible. Also I finally got hired to shoot one FD2 team.
As I get used to the track and layout I also benchmark myself as my photos improve. Looking back at Formula Drift Orlando galleries from 2015 and 2016 I see how much I hyped back then and how terrible the photos look to me now. There’s no arguing – photography is not a “buy best camera and done” career, I see huge improvement every year and understand next year I will laugh at pics I took today. But this is where I am right now.
As for gear I realized that you could shoot almost all event with a single 300mm lens especially from the infield media box. And some shots with 85mm in FF/crop modes. Total gear I was testing Sony a7ii & a77ii with a 300mm f4 lens by Tokina, Tamron 70-200 f2.8 USD (sold after event), Minolta 80-200 f2.8 High Speed, Sigma 85mm f1.4, and Canon 6D + 300mm f2.8. I really don’t want to shoot much with 70-200 range lenses, they are just not sharp enough and the focal range is not giving me photos I want.
